What interiors will 2022 be remembered for, and what trends will shape interior design in 2023? We have collected the main predictions and asked the opinion of a designer.

If you want to bring new life into the design of your apartment, you should at least keep an eye on the trends in the world of interior design. Vasilisa Pavlova, an architect of spaces and the founder of Design Bureau of Vasilisa Pavlova, shared with us her observations about the interior trends of 2022 and what will be relevant in interior design in 2023.

— In 2022, interior design was influenced by several trends:

1. Naturalness, the desire to be closer to nature.

2. Reasonable consumption and recycling. Many well-known furniture companies began to use recycled materials and accentuate it. For example, Kartell makes chairs out of recycled plastic. I think, this trend will also be relevant in 2023.

3. Bright plumbing fixtures. At the leading interior shows in 2022, visitors were surprised by colored faucets (blue, yellow, fuchsia), multicolored sinks and toilets.

4. More and more color is entering people’s lives: many booths and brands began to release bright collections and, without fear, combine different colors in the interior.

What trends will define interior design in 2023?

— I think, the trend for color in interiors will be relevant in 2023 and 2024, too. Because it is color that gives emotion, energizes people and makes interiors unique. People are tired of gray and beige interiors with marble on the walls. There will be a growing popularity of out of style interiors: on the one hand cozy and homely, on the other — artistic and playful.

It also seems to me that the leading European companies (trendsetters) will turn their attention to Asian and oriental cultures. Partly, this can already be seen in the novelties of light. We should expect new interesting prints and shapes.

Ordinary people will value even more the ability to make a wow-effect with a small budget: people will still want to equip their homes, to live in comfort and beauty. This is not a trend to save money, but a trend to smartly furnish their homes here and now.

Even more information about interior design trends that will conquer the world in 2023, we learned from popular sources on the world of design and architecture (archdaily.com, architecturaldigest.com, livspace.com, veranda.com). Here are the main predictions:

  • Sustainable development will remain a priority

Ecological approaches to design have been gaining momentum in recent years, and 2023 will also be the year of sustainable design. When choosing furniture and decor elements, people will increasingly ask questions: «where is it made,» «how is it made,» etc. Many will begin to reject inexpensive furniture in favor of antiques or other quality items that will stand the test of time and last for years to come.

  • Handmade goods will be in high demand

The share of handmade goods will increase in the new year as consumers become more interested in locally made artisanal items. People will seek to fill their homes with unique items and cool down to the mass market.

  • Bold stone accents will be revived

In 2023, beautiful natural materials such as travertine, marble in different colors (deep green, brown, and burgundy), as well as antique textures and terrazzo will be in use again.

  • Art in the interior is still essential

People intend to continue to include artwork in their design plans, as it brings all rooms to life. Sculpture tops the list of popular interior uses; followed by painting, drawings and photography, prints, actual NFT and digital art.

  • Rustic furniture with an accent on greenery — in focus

Interiors with an emphasis on greenery and rustic wooden furniture will take center stage in 2023. This will help the interior blend in a bit with the exterior and create a more cohesive design.

  • Kitchen design strives for functionality and colorfulness

There will be a move away from white kitchens toward color and unique style. Soft pastel shades such as blue and green will be popular. Frosted finishes and soft-close systems will also be the norm.

  • The arches will return, but they will be more artful

Arches and rounded doorways and windows will return in 2023, albeit in a more modern form. Originating back in ancient Rome, arches soften the hard edges and look very elegant. Examples of the use of arches in design include arched doorways, rounded furniture and geometric tiles with arched patterns.

  • The lighting will become more sculptural and showy

In 2023, expressive lighting in the form of large lampshades, bright pendant fixtures, and exquisite chandeliers will be gaining popularity.

  • Wellness is the driving design trend of 2023

Some designers believe that wellness rooms could replace home gyms in 2023. Since many of us spend a lot of time at home, we want our spaces to promote wellness. It is now popular to create special spaces in homes for meditation, yoga and home spas.
