Peschiera del Garda is one of the most characteristic towns of Lake Garda: it overlooks the lower Veronese shore of the lake at the point where the waters of Lake Garda flow into the Mincio river and is completely surrounded by canals.
The historic centre of Peschiera del Garda is in fact delimited by walls named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, which altered the natural course of the river. The first settlements date back to the Bronze Age (typical artefacts have been found: arrowheads, swords, etc.). In Roman times Peschiera became an important centre: there is evidence of Pliny the Elder and the name Peschiera. In order to facilitate connections, in addition to the natural route of the lake and the Mincio River, which allowed rapid communication up to the city of Mantua, the so-called Via Gallica was built in Roman times, connecting Bergamo and Brescia to Verona, touching precisely at the junction of Peschiera del Garda.Hide
