Canada has doubled the number of professional fields facing skills shortages. This is the data for the period from 2019 to 2021. That's why the country's government has launched a new process for admitting qualified professionals through the Express Entry system.

The Department of Migration Canada has identified categories of professionals who will be able to move to the country under the Express Entry economic migration system as early as 2023. These categories will be adjusted each year according to the country's need for certain professionals.

“I keep hearing from employers across the country about the severe labor shortage. These changes to Express Entry will ensure that we have the skilled workers we need. We can also increase the number of French-speaking applicants to help ensure the vitality of French-speaking communities. Simply put, Canada's immigration system has never been more responsive to the social or economic needs of the country,” said Sean Fraser, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

As early as July-August 2023, the IRCC will begin sending invitations to applicants who:

  • have a good command of the French language;
  • have experience in healthcare;
  • are professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM);
  • represent working professions (builders, carpenters, plumbers);
  • work in transportation;
  • work in agriculture.

A complete list of occupations can be found on the Government of Canada's website.

Candidates are rated on a point system that considers work experience, language skills, education level, and so on. Those who get the highest scores will be able to apply for permanent residency.

For reference. Express Entry is Canada's primary application management system for those who wish to immigrate permanently. Express Entry administers three economic immigration programs: 1) Federal Skilled Worker (FSWP), 2) Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and 3) Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
