According to the Swiss Parliament website, a majority of Council of States deputies voted against simplifying naturalization. The initiative proposed granting citizenship after 5 years of residence in the country and dropping the requirement for a Category C settlement permit.

Under the current system, applicants must reside in Switzerland for 10 years and hold a Category C permit.

However, this does not mean the initiative is dead. The final decision on the bill will be made through a federal referendum, the date of which has not yet been set.
