Spruce Island

Spruce Island, a small island located near Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine, has an area of around 80 acres.

The only residence on Spruce Island is the Stone House. In the summer, it is available for weekly rentals; shorter rental periods are possible in the off-season. 

With advance planning, accommodations for more than 18 people are possible.

More about accommodations. There are two distinct buildings that make up the house. The Main House is a large open space with high vaulted ceilings, a large fireplace, and a spacious and functional kitchen.

The Maine House has a single bedroom. A swing dangles from the Main House’s beams, and a «crow’s nest» on the roof offers thrilling views of the neighboring islands. 

Guest House has six bedrooms with private bathrooms. With the help of backup generators, electricity is generated from the sun and the wind. Wells and a sizable rainwater cistern provide the water supply.

There is no electricity at this property, but HughesNet satellite service provides Wi-Fi, as does cell phone service.

Things to do on this private island. Activities on and near Spruce Island include boating (both intra-island and inter-island), hiking, camping, and more.

Transportation. Free transportation is available on the first and last days to and from the island, with three round trips in a Sealegs or two round trips in a Munson landing craft.

Spectacle Island

Spectacle Island is a charming 5-acre island, which is situated between Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor in the US state of Maine.

More about accommodations. Finished in 2006, Spectacle Island’s distinctive selling point is its charming rusticness. The main house is set up to sleep six people in three bedrooms with two full bathrooms, with a king, queen, and two twin beds. The nearby beachfront bunkhouse sleeps an additional six people in four bunks and a double room in the attic.

With its convenient kitchen and dining space, entertaining is a breeze; and the living room, with its blazing fireplace and 92″ movie screen, is the perfect place to spend your evenings.

Things to do on this private island. Island exploration, whale watching, and more — visitors can partake in a variety of thrilling activities during their stay on this rural retreat. Get to know your local environment through activities like kayaking, sailing, and swimming. 

Apart from Spectacle Island, trips to Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island provide guests with the opportunity to experience the stunning Acadia National Park in Maine.

Transportation. Flyers from other countries should plan to arrive at Bangor International Airport. Those in the U.S. can also choose Bar Harbor Airport. From here, visitors may rent a car or have their two island hosts pick them up for a thirty-minute ride to the island’s banks.

Cheap option: private island overlooking a large lake

You can rent your own Maine private island with stunning views of the largest lake of Katahdin. Location — Indian Purchase Township. 

The 1/2 acre island offers complete seclusion, situated at least half a mile away from any other buildings, and boasting a quaint 475 sq ft two-storey camp.

This place is secluded and not connected to the grid, however it offers wonderful cell phone/wireless service. It is a sizeable, pristine lake that is largely untamed, with miles of shoreline featuring remote beaches and islands to discover.

More about accommodations. The kitchen in the cabin has all the essentials, including cooking and eating utensils, a 4 burner propane cooktop, a 6 cubic foot propane refrigerator/freezer, and a sink with a hand pump for water from the lake. There is also a living area with a futon, a table, and chairs, a bedroom with a queen size bed on the main floor, and a sleeping loft upstairs with two twin beds.

The outside of the cabin has a deck with a propane grill, picnic table, and firepit. Additionally, there is a new and clean outhouse. The island also boasts a 16 foot dock and a mooring for a boat.

Transportation. The entire island is for guests only, and a boat is a must for getting there.
