Much has been discussed about its meaning because if, for some authors, "Arada" is significant for "raised lands", others argue that "Herada", initial place name, and indicative of "ivy-covered site "at the time of its denomination, which seems sufficient proof of the dominant ( non-total ) inculture. The antiquity of the settlement of this territory is certainly much earlier than the 12th century, and it can be assumed that the archeology of the surroundings must reach pre-Roman times. Through the local toponymy it can be deduced how part of the territory that currently constitutes the parish of Aradas was found, before nationality: "Herados", "Cardosas", "Amedas", that is, populated with ivy, thistles, alder trees, to which is added the name "corn villa" ( Milio ), today the village of Verdemilho ( popular ethymology ).In the second half of the 12th century, documents from the time prove that the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra has some possessions in this place, because in 1166 it gave in to Count D. Gomes Pais "de Silva", to allow him undisputed possession of other places somewhere, and half a couple in Verdemilho, who had belonged to a Mendo Oséviz ( Eusébiz or Eusébio ), certainly the donor to the monastery: "unum medium casalem quit fuit by Menendo Oseviz in villa de Milio".Regarding the story of "Heerada", it is worth noting the possession of the place by Diogo Mendes who, in 1181 donated it, with his church of S. Pedro, to the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra. Due to this donation, the landlord was from the Cros, represented not by the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra, but by the convent of Serra do Pilar ( Vila Nova de Gaia ), branch of the former, the vicar having the annual income of 150 thousand kings. It was once Vila e Concelho, and belonged to the region of Esgueira and the Bishop of Coimbra. Only later did he move to Aveiro.Aradas is one of the seven urban parishes in the city of Aveiro. It is approximately three kilometers from the municipal headquarters and is limited by its counterparts in Glória, S. Bernardo and Oliveirinha, from the municipality of Aveiro, and through the parish of Ílhavo ( S. Salvador ), from the municipality with the same name. The places of Aradas, Verdemilho, Bonsucesso and Quinta do Picado are part of the parish.
