Germany intended to open its labor market as much as possible to foreign professionals, and to that end his Government had made it easier to obtain citizenship. In one of the variants it is necessary to live in the country for only 3 years to obtain German citizenship.

The German government on Wednesday, August 23, approved a bill submitted by the German Minister of the Interior, Nancy Feather (Nancy Faeser), which not only lowers the requirements for candidates, but also allows multiple citizenship. However, conditions for economic and democratic integration are still in place for naturalization.

It is worth considering the fact that the new law has yet to be approved by the Bundestag.

What changes are spelled out in the new law?

  • multiple citizenship will be possible;
  • the required period of residence for citizenship by naturalization will be reduced to five or three years (from the current eight years). To obtain German citizenship after three years of residence, you need "special integration achievements”. For example, it can be good knowledge of the German language, active volunteering or high professional skills;
  • German-language requirements for citizenship will be relaxed for the so-called “guest worker” generation, many of whom are Turks who came to Germany as migrant workers in the 1950s and 1960s.

We emphasize that the German government wants to attract workers from outside the European Union to fill hundreds of thousands of vacancies in various sectors of the economy. This is especially true for areas such as gastronomy, child care, information technology, and renewable energy.

For reference. At the end of 2021, about 72.4 million German citizens and about 10.7 million foreigners lived in Germany, of which about 5.7 million people have lived in the country for more than 10 years.
