Bamberg, like Rome, is located on seven hills. In ancient times, Bamberg, known from documents since 902, was called German Rome. The settlement grew under the shadow of Babenberch Castle, which gave the name of the East Frankish Babenberg dynasty. In 1020, the imperial couple in Babenberg was visited by Pope Benedict VIII. Henry and Kunigunda, numbered by descendants as saints, rest in the Bamberg Cathedral founded by them.
In the middle of the thirteenth century, the bishop of Bamberg greatly expanded his possessions, annexing part of the disintegrated Merania. In addition to the lands in Franconia, the bishopric included territories on the Danube, including the borders of modern Austria (sold to the Habsburgs in 1759). During the years of the Reformation, the lands of the bishopric were halved.
With the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire in 1802, Bamberg became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria.
