Business Immigration to Canada: Entrepreneur Program
The Start-up Visa Program in Canada is designed for immigrant entrepreneurs who have the skills and potential to create innovative businesses. The program aims to attract foreign entrepreneurs who can create jobs for Canadians and be globally competitive. It covers both start-ups and business immigration, providing support and funding through designated organizations. All the details are further below.
Startups
To participate in the program, startups must obtain a Letter of Support from a designated organization, such as an investor group, venture capital fund, or business incubator. The Government of Canada approves these organizations and provides support and funding to startups. The commitments include financial contributions:
- Investor groups must invest at least $75,000 in a qualifying business.
- Venture capital funds must invest at least $200,000.
- Business incubators must accept the applicant into their program.
At the same time, priority is given to startups in the field of innovative technologies. They must create jobs for Canadians, excluding relatives. A startup that can potentially become competitive at the global level is also considered promising.
Business
In the case of business, the owners must register it in Canada. An important nuance is the mandatory management of the business from Canada. At the same time, a significant part of the business processes must be carried out in Canada. That is, the program makes it easier for enterprises focused on the development of the Canadian economy.
The main selection criterion for a business is the percentage of voting rights held. Voting rights give the holder the ability to vote on corporate matters of the company and are attached to each share outstanding. The applicant must own 10% or more of the total voting rights of the company and, together with the nominated entity, own more than 50% of the total voting rights.
Application Process
From October 14, 2022 Applications for participation in the program are submitted online. The official website of the migration program contains IMM 5759 instruction to assist in completing forms. If the applicant is unable to complete the form online, the application can be requested in another format (paper, Braille, or large print) or a representative can be used.
Important. This program is not available in the province of Quebec, which has its own immigration requirements. For more information on the Quebec program, see the Quebec-selected skilled workers program.
