The gate of Minsk is one of the main symbols of our city.
The front gate began to be erected immediately after the Great Patriotic War, and was built between 1947 and 1953. The author of this project was the Leningrad architect Boris Rubanenko. The architectural complex consists of two 11-storey towers at the corners of 5-storey houses located symmetrically transverse axis of the Station Square.
The architect drew a historical parallel: nine centuries ago Minsk already had its own entrance gates – two wooden towers of Minsk Zamchik. Their remains were discovered during excavations in the area of Nemiga street.
On the facade of one of the towers there is a clock with a dial diameter of more than 3.5 meters, and the length of the largest, minute hand is 1.69 meters. The clock is the largest in Belarus. They were brought to Minsk from defeated Germany as a trophy on a train with railway equipment - assembling this watch became a very difficult task for builders.
Until the end of the twentieth century, the hands of the clock made the gears move and a 1.5-meter pendulum that lifted 300 kg of cargo. Now the arrows move, thanks to electronics. On another tower there is a reinforced concrete coat of arms of the Belarusian SSR, cast by special order. Also, the buildings were decorated with concrete sculptures of a worker and a kolkhoz woman, an engineer and a soldier - all with a Belarusian flavor, however, by 1975 due to the deterioration of the concrete and the risk of collapse, the figures were dismantled, but in 2004 they were restored.
