The Uruguayan government announced the launch of a program for digital nomads. It is designed for remote workers, either self-employed or those who work remotely for companies outside Uruguay.

Immediately note that it is best to apply for a visa while already in Uruguay to be able to pay the visa fee on time. The thing is that you need to do this at a local bank within 24 hours after completing the application form.

The key features of the program

  • Online application: you do not need to visit an embassy or consulate to apply for an Uruguayan nomad visa. The whole process is done online through the official government website.
  • No minimum income requirements: unlike many other programs, Uruguay does not impose minimum income requirements to obtain a visa.
  • Extension of visa: when your visa expires, you can extend it. However, to do this, you will need to get vaccinations in Uruguay and provide certificates of no criminal record from all countries where you have lived for at least six months in the last five years.
  • Attractiveness for workers in the field of technology: technological services in the country are exempt from taxes.
  • An individual submission for each person. You can't apply jointly with your spouse or minor children, but you can easily apply separately.

The process for obtaining an Uruguayan digital nomad visa

  • During the online application process, you will need to fill out your personal information as well as an application proving your ability to support yourself while in the country.
  • After completing the application, you will need to pay a registration fee (within 24 hours of application). It is approximately 9 euros and can be paid at local banks or, if not possible, at stores that people use to pay bills in Uruguay.
  • After successfully applying and paying the fee, you will be emailed a permit. It allows you to stay legally in Uruguay for 180 days.
