THE HISTORY OF THE PLACE
The history of the complex in Nibork dates back to the early 20th century. Around 1905, on the edge of the forest complex Stadtwald, a recreational area was created for the inhabitants of Nidzica (German: Neidenburg). Already in the interwar period, this place was vibrant – there was a city swimming pool, a restaurant in the foresthouse and a dance gazebo.
During World War II, the area was converted into a place of rest for officers from the Eastern Front. In the late 1944–1945 period, the Red Army was stationed here. It was in Nibork that Alexander Sołżenicin – a Russian writer, laureate of the Nobel Prize, later author of the GUŁag Archipelago. As a young officer, he was arrested here for criticism of Stalinism and sent to the camp. Memoirs from this period were made in the poem Pruskie Noce – a dark testimony to the brutal occupation of East Prussia.
After the war, the complex served as forestry and labor houses. It's been abandoned since the 1990s. In 2001 the buildings bought the Spółdzielnia Praca Polityj, and the revalorization project was entrusted to architect Krzysztof Ojrzyński. The reconstruction was carried out with the utmost care – including deepening and strengthening foundations, reconstruction of wooden and historical details. In 2004, the complex was awarded the prestigious title of Revitalization of the Year given by the Ministry of Culture.
In the following years, Nibork functioned as the home of creative journalists of Politics. There were also seminars with the participation of outstanding historians, authors of textbooks and teachers from all over Poland, organized in cooperation with the school curatorship. A unique library dedicated to the history of Warmia and Mazury and Eastern Prussia was also assembled here.
