DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA:
Kefalas — is a village located at an altitude of 282 meters above sea level, in which about 300 people live permanently. It is part of the municipality of Vamos in the Apokoronas region, which in turn consists of the following villages: Kefalas, Drapanos and Palailoni. It is a green and quiet part of the island compared to, for example, Akrotiri (a peninsula near Chania), where there are fewer houses and more traditional way of life. Apokoronas has many olive groves, forests and farms, as well as several excellent beaches such as Almyrida, Kalyves and the long beach of Georgioupolis, about 10 kilometers long.
Kefalas is over 800 years old. It is believed to have been founded around 1175 AD during the Byzantine Empire under Emperor Michael Comnenus. The site contains many historical buildings from the Venetian era and later periods. Some of them are beautifully restored, others lie in ruins. From 1669 to 1898, Kefalas was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire.
The main part of the village has interesting architecture (mostly preserved from the Turkish period). There are supposedly about 30 churches in the village, most of which were built during the Turkish occupation, when the Turkish rulers did not confiscate the lands on which the churches stood.
The village of Kefalas has 2 taverns, 2 mini markets and 4 cafe. Kefalas is ideally located with easy access to the village and the nearest tourist resort of Almyrida, which is 6 km away, as well as Georgioupolis, which is 10 km away.
