Description

The famous mine of Zorba the Greek, about which we read in Kazantzakis’ book «Zorba the Greek» can be found in Mani, Messinia and not in Crete. In fact, the author was one of its owners & had lived in Mani. Apart from his house, which he rented for many years, Kazantzakis also set up shacks and lived in caves in the beautiful beach of Kalogria, next to the waves, so that he could study and write. It was here that the renowned Cretan author wrote the masterpiece «Zorba the Greek» and it is because of this book that many foreign tourists over the years come to visit Stoupa, especially Europeans. This historic relic, combining a great legacy with a unique aesthetic, has been completely restored and can be inhabited today. It consists of 3 levels and is entirely made of stone. Visitors will have to travel back in time just to reach it, leaving their vehicle at a distance of 30 meters away and then taking a brief walk along a traditional alley. At the entrance of the property, one can find a small stone yard, which leads to the central home. The ground floor is 91,62 sq.m and it comprises a single space with a stone build bed, traditional fireplace and an interior wooden staircase which leads to the upper floor. The upper floor has a open living and dining room with a separate stone arch which leads to a completely renovated kitchen. The kitchen has maintained the character of the place, whilst at the same time providing modern amenities. From the living room, there is access to a wooden veranda with a view of the garden. Outside of the kitchen, there is an open stone balcony with a dining table, leading to a small garden behind the home. On the ground floor of the home, there is an extra room with a separate entry, as well as 2 storage spaces and an external toilet and shower space.
