A backyard is an area located behind a house, usually in the backyard of a residential area. In Western countries, such plots are an integral part of country houses and suburban developments, often used for recreation, gardening, or organizing play areas for children.

Backyards can include green spaces, lawns, barbecue areas, swimming pools, or playgrounds, which makes them an important part of the living space, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life and functionality of the house.

Popular styles and types of backdrops:

  • Tropical style. A garden with dense greenery and large-leaved plants such as palm trees and hibiscus. It is suitable for warm and humid climates, but in dry areas, more drought-resistant plants such as guava or bougainvillea can be used.
  • Xeriscape. A landscape style with minimal watering requirements, which makes it especially popular in arid regions. It includes the use of native and drought-resistant plants such as cacti and agaves. Gravel or mulch is often used instead of a grass surface.
  • Desert style. This style is similar to xeriscape, but with an emphasis on plants that are resistant to heat and drought, such as succulents and cacti. This style usually includes sand, stones and decorative boulders. This format requires minimal maintenance.
  • Meadow. A style that imitates natural clearings and meadows with an abundance of wild flowers and ornamental grasses. It is suitable for temperate climates and attracts pollinators such as butterflies and bees.
  • Modern bohemian. The style includes elements of relaxed, pseudo-naturalistic design with an emphasis on bright furniture, various plants, and neutral shades.

The idea of a backyard is widespread in North America, Australia, and the United Kingdom, where it serves as a place for personal leisure as well as provides an opportunity to organize events or even accommodate additional buildings such as garages, sheds, or areas for installing solar panels. This term has gained popularity due to the increasing interest in landscaping the territories adjacent to the house, especially in conditions of dense urban development.
