Northern Cyprus continues to strengthen measures to improve road safety. Changes, which came into effect in mid-2025, include stricter fines, a revised penalty point system, and an expanded list of violations.

The new penalties are applied under the Law on the Resolution of Traffic Offenses Without Prosecution and Penalties.

Main Changes

🚗 Speeding

The fine now depends on how much the speed limit is exceeded:

* 10-20 km/h over the limit — 7,089 TL and 10 penalty points;
* 20-40 km/h over the limit — 10,634 TL and 30 penalty points;
* more than 40 km/h over the limit — 17,723 TL.

⚠️ Dangerous Driving

Dangerous driving carries a fine of 14,179 TL.

Failure to yield to emergency vehicles will cost 10,634 TL.

🚔 Ignoring Police Orders

One of the most serious offenses is refusing to comply with a police officer's order to stop.

The penalty is:

* 70,893 TL;
* 100 penalty points.

📱 Using a Phone While Driving

Using a mobile phone or tablet while driving is now also considered a serious offense.

The fine is:

* 70,893 TL;
* 50 penalty points.

🅿️ Other Common Violations

Fines for a number of other violations have also been increased:

* Illegal parking — 7,089 TL;
* Not wearing a seat belt — 14,179 TL and 10 points;
* Not having a child seat — 14,179 TL* and *10 points;
* Stopping a vehicle on the side of the road at night without reflective elements — 10,634 TL.

When the case goes to court

Some violations do not carry a fixed administrative fine and are immediately considered in court.

These include:

* Driving while intoxicated (with an alcohol content of over 150 mg) or under the influence of drugs;
* Third offense for dangerous driving within 15 months;
* road traffic accidents with injuries, including those involving intoxication.

In such situations, the court may impose:

* a fine of up to 15 minimum wages;
* suspension of driving license for up to 6 months;
* imprisonment for up to 3 years.

The tightening of legislation is aimed at reducing the number of serious violations and improving road safety in Northern Cyprus.
