The former water mill building (half-timber style) is for sale in the village of Sopotskino, surrounded by a forest and a cascade of lakes. Sopotskin — is the gateway to the famous Augustow Canal. At the beginning of the 19th century, this man-made waterway connected Neman with Vistula. Today these can only be seen in Holland, England or Sweden. The channel once predetermined the development of the town. At the peak of construction, about ten thousand people worked here. Breweries, potteries, windmills, etc. appeared in the area.
Railways reduced the transport importance of the canal. But interest among tourists has increased. Between the First and Second World War, a large festival was held at the Dombrovka lock — «Sea Festival». European rich people organized bike rides and kayaks here. Two paddle steamers ran from Grodno to Augustow and back. In 2005, after restoration, the canal acquired its original appearance, and thousands of tourists again go to protected areas.
The entire Sopotskina district — is a huge open-air museum. Just look at the forts of the Grodno fortress. In terms of its scale and richness of history, it is not inferior to Brest. Peter I began to strengthen the citadel on a grand scale during the Northern War. Apparently, the power of the fortresses of the fortress impressed Charles XII so much that he did not dare to storm.
Not far from the town there is a palace and park complex «Svyatsk». This is the residence of the noble Volovich family, built in 1799 by the Italian architect Giuseppe Sacco in the image and likeness of Versailles. The highlight of the estate is the — system of ponds located on different levels. The palace and surrounding area were the scenery for the famous Russian military film action film «Assassination».
From generation to generation, the secrets of painting Easter eggs are passed on in Sopotskin. Local waxworks (patterns are applied using wax) have long been recognized as the intangible cultural heritage of Belarus. Faberge's masterpieces — are made of precious metals and stones, and Sopotsk's — are ordinary Easter eggs, but with unique patterns based on the black color of the mother earth. A pysanka museum was even opened at the cultural and tourist center. The exhibition includes more than five hundred chicken, goose, and duck Easter symbols.
The place received an unusual name from the surname of the nobleman to whom the Polish king donated these lands in the 16th century. The local people dubbed the Nikolai Sopotko estate Sopotsky Dvor. The only thing that has survived from that time is the — Jewish cemetery, the oldest in Belarus. Tourists from all over the world come to see burials from the 13th century. On almost a hundred gravestones you can make out the inscriptions.
