Information about the city of Sozopol
The city of Sozopol is located on the Bulgarian black sea coast, 35 km south of the city of Burgas. Its center «Old town» is located on a small peninsula. Nearby are the islands of St. Ivan and St. Peter. In 610g to Hr. on the site of the current Sozopol, an Elin colony was founded under the name of Apollonia Pont. The name of the city comes from the name of the god Apollo. The city develops as an important shopping and port center. Near the town of Sozopol, a unique Thracian sanctuary of Beglik Tash was found. It is a circle of huge stones. Thus, the stones form a clock, calendar and observatory. Beglik Tash – is the so-called Bulgarian Stonehenge.
Only 10 km south of the city of Sozopol is the reserve «Ropotamo». Within the boundaries of the reserve there are 257 species of birds, of which 71 species are listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The reserve is the habitat of rare animal species, there are noble deer and land, sulfur, mouflon, foxes, otters and colonies of bats in rock caves.
