Information about the city of Sozopol
Sozopol is located 35 km south of the city of Burgas, 20 minutes by car from the resort town of Primorsko.
In 611 BC. settlers from the Asia Minor city of Miletus and the city of Phocaea founded a new polis on today's Sozopol peninsula, which they named Apollonia. Gradually, ancient Apollonia expanded and flourished, becoming a large trading center and pier.
Of particular interest are the Sozopol houses of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, located in the so-called Old Town of Sozopol. They are built of stone, sheathed in wood, with a high ground floor used in the past to preserve wine and food.
Nowadays, the city of Sozopol welcomes thousands of tourists every summer and captivates with its many natural and cultural attractions, and the modern yacht marina can satisfy the taste of the most capricious yachtsman.
A unique Thracian sanctuary, Beglik Tash, was discovered near the city of Sozopol. It is a circle of huge stones. Thus, the stones located form a clock, calendar and observatory. Beglik Tash – is the so-called Bulgarian Stonehenge. Just 10 km. south of the city of Sozopol there is the «Ropotamo» reserve. Within the boundaries of the reserve there are 257 species of birds, of which 71 species are listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria.
