The first mention of the city dates back to the III century. BC. e., when the city was a well-fortified settlement. Then the Illyrian queen Tetua ruled in it. In those days, there was the first mint in Montenegro. During the Roman-Illi wars, the Roman Empire took possession of the city for several centuries. It was the heyday of Risan, after which a unique legacy of ancient culture, architecture and art remained.
In the Middle Ages, power in Risan changed many times. It belonged to the Serbian principality of Travuniya, then was part of the Zeta, was under the control of the Duke Stefan Vukšić, was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, was managed by Austria and France. All this left its own touches on the city.
Now it is a small and quiet town, with the necessary infrastructure and a special flavor. There is something to see here, but the mass tourist does not know about it.
