History of the city of Pirmasens!
Pirmasens was first mentioned in documents around 850 as pirminiseusna. It was named after the itinerant preacher Pirminius, who founded the nearby Hornbach monastery (as well as the Reichenau monastery on Lake Constance).
Louis IX of Hesse-Darmstadt (1719-1790) is the founder of the city of Pirmasens. Under his rule, Pirmasens grew from a village with 30-40 houses to a garrison and in 1763 to a residential town, which had around 9,000 inhabitants when Ludwig died.
Out of existential necessity, the so-called „slabs“ were created, according to legend, shoes made from leftover leather and uniforms that were of a simple nature. Jean Joss, who is now commemorated by the cobbler's fountain in the pedestrian zone, began the national trade in shoes.
Initially run by the „Pirmasenser Shoe Girls“, the trade laid the foundation for later global shoe exports. This first „conversion“ to be dealt with by the city and its inhabitants was successful: the economic upheavals involved brought the Pirmasensers economic boom after a difficult period of beginning and development, and worldwide fame as the „German Shoe Metropolis" as early as the 1920's.
