Mezhaparks (in German also known as Kaiserwald) is a neighborhood in North Central Riga. The name literally translates to 'forest park'. In the 17th century the Mezhapark neighborhood was by the name Kaiserwald, because in 1621 the King of Sweden Gustav II built a field for his army in this place. This name remained until 1923, when it was officially changed to Mezhapark. Until the 19th century farmers' environment lived from this place, they provided Riga with their production. It was also the resting place for city people during summer time. At the end of the 19th century, the chief engineer of Riga planned to build villas in the Lake Kishezers region. At the beginning of the 20th century the active building has begun. More then 100 houses were built. But the situation changed after World War II, when the beautiful villas were nationalized and after this many houses were left. In the 1990s the houses were returned to their owners.
